วิชาเศรษฐศาสตร์สมัยใหม่นั้นเริ่มต้นเมื่อ Adam Smith ได้เขียนหนังสือ The Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations ซึ่งกลายมาเป็นรากฐานของวิชาเศรษฐศาสตร์และศาสตร์ทางด้านการบริหารธุรกิจในทุกวันนี้
