University of Glasgow

In 1451, the University of Glasgow was founded at the wish of King James II that Scotland should have two universities, equal to England having Oxford and Cambridge. This resulted in Glasgow becoming the forth oldest University in the English-speaking world. Currently, it also has the fourth largest financial endowment after Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh which means good news for investment in facilities and services for students.
Glasgow has a particularly high proportion of home students – Glaswegians love their city so much they don’t want to leave! Approximately half are Glaswegian, almost 40% are the rest of the UK and only 13% are from other countries.
For centuries Glasgow has been regarded as one of the top European universities along with Edinburgh and St Andrews. It was the first to set up a Department of Engineering – the history of its engineering practice dates back to 1760 when James Watt began his work on the steam engine. It now has the largest science faculty outside London and some of the world’s greatest scientists are included in the University’s alumni including Lord Kelvin – one of the founders of Thermodynamics; John Logie Baird – the television inventor; Joseph Lister – the initiator of anti-septic surgery; and Joseph Black – the discoverer of carbon dioxide.
The University’s contributions to the world also extend to Social Science – the Scottish Enlightenment was initiated in Glasgow when Francis Hutcheson who occupied Glasgow’s Chair of Philosophy, provided the world with the utilitarian principle, one of the fundamental theories underlying Classical Economics. Adam Smith, ones of the most famous sons of Glasgow University, incorporated Hutcheson’s principle with David Hume’s free trade idea and initiated the concept of Classical and Political Economics.
Based next to Kelvingrove Park on the Gilmorehill Campus in the city’s stylish west end, Glasgow has one of the most beautiful university environments you could study in. It is a terrific peaceful university located just 15 minutes far from one of the liveliest cities in the UK.
