University of St Andrews

As the oldest Scottish university and the third oldest in Britain, St Andrews is a well established and fashionable University with a strong reputation. Located in a relatively rural area on the east coast of Scotland it does not have a large local population to draw from and some 40% of its students come from south of the border – earning it the nickname of Scotland’s English university! However with another 25% coming from 75 countries across the globe, this university has a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. Fee concessions and exchange schemes have boosted applications, particularly from the United States, which on its own provides approximately a quarter of all first-year students in 2003-04.

St Andrews has the best teaching and research grades in Scotland and, for the third year in succession, was ranked top Scottish university in many league tables. Uniquely, every subject assessed was rated either Excellent or Highly Satisfactory for teaching, demonstrating quality across the board. With Psychology and English particularly highly regarded. Famous alumni include Robert Watson-Watt, a descendent of James Watt, who invented radar which significantly contributed to Britain’s victory in the Second World War and John Napier the inventor of logarithms.
